Functional fitness is the latest exercise trend, and it's a fabulous class for older adults, beginners, or someone who is having trouble working exercise into their life.
Marking a departure from other exercise programs, the goals of functional fitness are strengthening your everyday movements rather than simply building your muscles. This is a great class for older adults because it helps to prevent injury and regain lost movement. As we get older, our bodies naturally lose muscle, flexibility, and mobility which can impair our ability to live life to the fullest. Simple tasks like carrying heavy grocery bags can become taxing as our bodies age.
Functional-fitness programs offer antidotes to those changes by utilizing exercises that involve multiple joints and muscles. The exercises mimic everyday movements. For instance, a functional exercise might use the elbows, shoulders, spine, hips, knees, and ankles, focusing on attaining better balance and coordination through a marriage of all those joints.
Functional-fitness is proven to be great for shoulder-flexibility, lower and upper body strength, and improved agility and balance. Some participants testified to finding it easier to look over their shoulder when backing up a car, for instance. While other exercises focus on the muscles, functionally-fit exercises have a strong focus on the joints.
Our Functionally FITT class at Addie's is designed with traditional functional-fitness maxims in mind. It's a great class for beginners and older adults who find incorporating exercise into their lifestyle challenging. The class is 25 minutes, making it a great class for beginners. There is no person on earth that doesn't suffer from stress. Somewhere between carpool, work deadlines, and grocery shopping, all of us get frazzled. Each of us knows the "I can't say yes to one more thing!" burn out.
But it's in time like these that we need to remember self-care. There are simple activities we can do to combat stress and find our zen. We found these wonderful life reminders/stress-busters in Sarah Ban Breathnach's Simple Abundance, and just had to share. Cheers to serene, joyful days this holiday season.

There's something about September that signals new beginnings. It's a time of year for reflection and resolutions.
When we make resolutions in January, as Katharine Elizabeth Fite once wrote, we are "worn out in spirit, body, and pocketbook, and have no real urge to do anything but rest." January resolutions are about will, whereas September resolutions are about what we really want.
What do you want more of or less of in your life this September? More me time? More serenity and peace of mind? Exercise proves time and time again to be one of the best things we can do for our bodies, minds, and spirits.
At Addie's, we have several types of exercise classes, one on one training sessions, and pilates four to a group classes to help you reconnect with your goals and recharge your batteries. Here's to a happy, healthy September full of positive change. Give Addie's a call. Let us help you get more of what you want this fall.
